16 Dec 2006 – 16:00 Screening of Bantsuma: The Life of Tsumasaburo Bando at Furuishiba Bunka Center in Koto-ku

Around 150 fans of Japanese silent film gathered December 16 for a screening of Bantsuma: The Life of Tsumasaburo Bando at the Furuishiba Culture Center in Tokyo. Known as the “king of sword fights,” Tsumasaburo Bando was a seminal figure in the development of Japanese cinema, and the film provides a documentary account of Bantsuma’s life interspersed with many of his movie highlights and interviews with those close to him.

Silent film critic Larry Greenberg opened the screening with a brief introduction of the film’s production and discussion of Bantsuma’s place in the genre of Japanese silent film.

The screening also provided patrons an opportunity to purchase a digitally reproduced version of Bantsuma: The Life of Tsumasaburo Bando, which has been recognized worldwide with official entries at leading film festivals including the Berlin International Film Festival and London International Film Festival. Also available for purchase was the DVD-ROM The Masterpieces of Japanese Silent Cinema, an indispensable database of Japanese silent movies, in addition to various silent film-related publications.
